Demystifying Digital Marketing: What is this Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing is the use of technology, particularly the internet and mobile technology, to promote business and services. To a layman, the term digital marketing seems like some technical jargons used only by people in the IT industry. However, this is not the case as this term is applicable to all industry, as long as customers are involved in the business.

To understand this term better, I would define the two words in the phrase: digital and marketing. The term ‘Digital’ suggests the use of computer technology to represent data. As the computer technology has evolved over time – from desktops to small handheld, and desktop publishing to graphics, various output of the evolution are being used for business benefits.

The word “marketing” suggests in a very basic sense, the process of communicating the value of a product or service to potential customers for the purpose of selling that product or service. However, marketing is everything a company does to acquire customers and maintain a relationship with them.

Putting these two terms together, Digital Marketing is defined as the use of mobile technology(internet, web, emails, social medias, etc) to communicate products or services to potential customer for the purpose of selling that product or service, and using such plaform to acquire and keep the customers.

Advantages of Digital Marketing Over Traditional Marketing:
Traditional Marketing
– Limited to local audience
– More costly to implement
– Results not easy to measure
– It’s static, no way to interact with the customers

Digital Marketing
– Infinite audience, local and global
– There is feedback – customer interaction
– Takes time to see results but sure pay off.
– Viral
– Measureable results
– Can be used with low budget: this is good news for small businesses and startup as it can be employed with low budget.

Types of Digital Marketing
Digital marketing offers multiple channels which could be used to effectively promote brand and products. These are:
– Social Media Marketing(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Pinterest, etc)
– Email Marketing
– Search marketing(Adwords)
– Display marketing
– Video marketing
– Affliates marketing
– Web
– Mobile apps
– Ecommerce
The job of the digital marketing consultant or a PR department of a business is to find channels which result in maximum two-way communication and a better overall ROI for the brand. Each of the different types of Digital marketing channels is broad but as a business or marketer or enterpreneur, you need to understand the basics. W: Who is our customers?
We can say this is the most important aspect of digital marketing, to understand who our customer is. In other to have effective campaign and get benefits of Digital marketing, you must ask the following questions about your customer:
Who are my clients? What’s there age, sex, locations?
What type of device do they use – mobile or desktop?
Where do they spend more time online: facebook, twitter, instagram, specific blogs or search engines?
You need to find out who your customers are.

H: How Do We Find Our Customers?
This is where market research and advertising comes into play. With digital marketing, you can use social media to find your customer or have strategic partnership to find and build your customer base. You can use partners like Google, Facebook to get and build your customer base. How this is done would be explained in future articles and trainings.

C: Cost.
How much will it cost you to acquire a lead? When you start to advertise online, you will naturally start to incur cost, and this would generate significant lead flow for you. You need to know in clear value how much it takes to acquire each lead. Cost Per Lead – is the digital marketing term for this.

P: Profit(the BIG one!)
Without profit, we have no digital marketing. We need to know on the average, how much revenue each lead brings us. This is called A.R.P.L(Average Revenue Per Lead) in digital marketing. Your Digital Marketing expert or consultant can help you to calculate this.
